Send Off From Iceland
It’s a strange feeling to go to a place that is almost the complete opposite of where you’ve come from and to not have a single feeling of culture shock. Reykjavik is landscaped by volcanoes and glaciers with lava fields, natural waterfalls, geysers and beautiful arctic coasts. It could not be more different than Chicago, but it felt like home right away.
Iceland Airwaves Day Five (11/9): Just Another Snake Cult
Saturday morning started off with a soak in what could be considered an eighth wonder of the world: the Blue Lagoon, a geothermic pool full of misty blue mineral water, heated from the inner earth. Icelanders say the water has healing powers, and it was clear that the rumors were true as my head and body ached from a long night before dissipated.
Iceland Airwaves Day Four (11/8): The Walking Who, Sometime, Amaury
The Walking Who took the stage at Iðnó on Saturday night to perform their latest EP to Iceland Airwaves: Mansions. Vocalist Rohin Paul described to the audience his experience of living in a house together in a small ’60s house in Australia. The house was thought to be haunted after a wealthy old widow passed away and several different artists occupied the space in what Paul described as an “artistic playground,” full of relics of the house’s past occupiers.
Iceland Airwaves Day Three (11/7): Kontinuum, Fufanu (Review)
Kontinuum’s guitars were all over the place at Gaukurinn Friday night. The melodies leaped and bounded, and each progression came with a surprise: after the crowd had finally determined the mellow mood of a slow song, guitarists Thorlakkur Thor Gudmansson and Ingi Þór Pálsson would unexpectedly dive into an explosion of sound.
Iceland Airwaves Day Two (11/6): Stereo Hypnosis, In the Company of Men, Muck, Rokkurro
Rain fell within the Harpa Kaldalón stage on Friday night to kick off Stereo Hypnosis‘ ambient set – or at least that’s what it sounded like. The surround sound in the theater-seated auditorium enveloped the room into a thunderstorm with a large screen behind the three men displaying morphing visuals that mimicked ocean waves crashing into a black abyss.
Icelandic Culture Preview: Bringing International Bands to the U.S.
We’ll be en route to Iceland Airwaves tomorrow! Students enrolled in the Radio Department’s Covering International Festivals: Iceland course will travel to Iceland to cover the festival, Icelandic culture and more, beginning Nov. 5. Follow their journey here. Check out a preview story below. Iceland Airwaves showcases a few American bands, but the majority of artists performing are native to the island.

This study abroad trip is not my first time in Florence, but this could not be more different from the first time that I visited as solely a tourist. There are basic skills of survival that a hotel will provide you with: breakfast, a cleaning service and help with taxis, buses and directions throughout the city.

I'm Megan. I'm a graduate from Columbia College Chicago with a BFA in Journalism. I've written for blogs, magazines and have produced NPR-style radio pieces. I was a section editor as well as contributing writer to the Spring/Summer 2013 edition of Echo Magazine, which was later awarded the Pacemaker Award. I have a passion for music and the stories that surround it, for travel, world news and for human interests in general. I'm always found where good food, music, people and drinks coalesce.
